Unboxing $1500 Mixing Speakers – ADAM Audio A7X Studio Monitors Review

August 14, 2019

– Welcome back Brites, and if you’re new, this isn’t our typical video. We do lots of covers and stuff, so check out our other videos. Today we are doing an unboxing
of the last puzzle piece to our new recording setup. A lot of you guys may
have already seen it, but we have a full studio
tour on the channel. Go check it out we’ll leave it in the card and the description. As well as our unboxing of our new, amazing computer that we put
up on our gaming channels. So we’ll also link to that. But today we’re opening
the last puzzle piece to our new computer setup. And that is new studio monitors! Adam Audio A7X Studio Monitors, which is basically computer
speakers made for mixing. We’ve been using KRKs,
Red Limited Edition KRKs, since like the beginning of Terabrite and they’re kind of the
bottom of the barrel but we are massively
upgrading with these A7X’s. I’m so excited to try ’em out. – So we get a lotta people asking us what we use to record and stuff. That’s why we did the studio tour, that’s why we showed
you guys our computer. And we’re gonna show you guys these studio monitors today as well. Make sure to smash that like button if you want more videos like this. ‘Cause I know there’s a
lotta you guys out there that want stuff like this, so
let us know in the comments, and with likes, and just like it anyways, because YouTube is… Let’s just be honest, YouTube is really difficult these
days, and the likes matter. So today we’re unboxing
and doing the review of the Adam Audio A7X Studio Monitors. No that’s not Avenged Sevenfold, and it’s not to be confused with the A7S, which is what we’re using
to record this video. These are studio monitors. And no they’re not monitors
where you see things. They’re called monitors
because they’re made to accurately reproduce the
audio going through them, and as a result, these
are really expensive. If you want a good pair of
studio monitors like these, you’re gonna have to pay $750.00 each. You have to buy ’em separately, so that’s about what, $1,500.00. So they’re not cheap but
you get what you pay for. But in this particular case,
we actually reached out to Adam Audio and said
hey, we know how awesome your speakers are because
some of the producers I look up to, like Glen
Fricker, Joey Sturgis, Fluff, probably Joel Wanasek, they all use Adam Audio
A7X Studio Monitors. And to me, if that many people
are using these speakers, they must be special. So I sent them an email
and basically said hey, if you send us a pair of A7X
Studio Monitors for review, we’ll gladly review on our channel for all of our viewers to see and they absolutely loved the idea. But here’s the kicker, in the email, this is what they said. And I quote, “There
are no strings attached “regarding the quality or
outcome of the review.” That sounds like someone
that’s pretty confident in their product. And that also means if
something goes wrong, if there’s something
I don’t like about it, I’m gonna tell you because there’s no strings attached. I can do whatever I want. That’s a pretty brave thing for you to say there, Adam Audio. So let’s get right into
this, let’s do an unbiased review of these things. Let’s see if we like ’em. So we got a lot of flack
on our last unboxing video, for using scissors to cut the tape. We upgraded our unboxing tool,
so let’s get right into this. (dramatic music) The box inside a box. (dramatic music) Ooh. – [Sabrina] Ooh. – So looks like delivery was
a little harsh on this one. So hopefully we have working speakers, and hopefully, hopefully
there’s nothing wrong with them. But we’ll, I’m sure they’re fine. (dramatic music) There’s your user manual. We’re not going to be needing that. Power cable. Whoa. (dramatic music) Ah, ah, ah. (laughing) It’s a nice little blanket there. – [Sabrina] What about the speaker? – [DJ] Oh this is nice too. – [Sabrina] Holy. – [DJ] Look at that. – [Sabrina] That’s beautiful. – [DJ] Would ya look at that. (dramatic music) – Ah! (laughing) (dramatic humming) (dramatic music) Woo! (dramatic music) Ooh! (dramatic music) – So as you can see we hooked up the Adam Audio A7X Studio
Monitors to our new computer. The interface we’re running it through is the RME Fireface UFX+. Let’s see how this sounds. But one thing to note
before we get into this, is these speakers are
straight from the factory, and they’re not broken in at all. A lot of studio engineers
and people that own studio monitors like these would tell you that you need to break
in your speakers first to get the optimal quality from them. And basically breaking in speakers is just a matter of listening to music. You listen to your
favorite music pretty loud, or you could play a pig noise through it, that’s what some people recommend. But the thing is, it’s actually up for debate on the internet whether or not you really do
need to break in your speakers. Some people think it’s a myth and you don’t need to do it at all. Some people think there’s
a fine line between breaking in your speakers,
and breaking your speakers. (laughing) So I don’t
know, there’s like a lot of information, a lotta misinformation. You never know what to believe. Personally, I find it hard to believe I’ll find any difference
between now and a year from now when the speakers are
definitely broken in. I mean I’m just guessing. But I find it hard to
believe they’re gonna sound that much different,
you know what I’m sayin’? So let’s get right into
this, and listen to this. And you can see our reaction, which by the way that’s
all you’re really gonna get out of this is a reaction from us. We can’t really reproduce
what the speakers sound like with a microphone. So ideally what you’re gonna see right now is what KRK users for
the past like 10 years are gonna think about
these new awesome speakers. And just for the record on
the back of the speakers is a high shelf, a low
shelf and a tweeter level. We’re gonna leave that
at the factory default. Just right down the center for now. We’ll probably end up
changing that down the line, but our first reaction’s gonna
be just the factory default right down the center. So let’s see what we
think about these things, let’s turn them on. By the way that’s a level right there, and then we’ve got the on button. So we’re gonna leave that at zero for now, and slowly turn it up. I don’t know how loud these are gonna get. So we’re gonna go ahead and play our cover of Ariana Grande, No Tears Left to Cry. It’s our last cover we released. We mixed this thing in one night, but it was just like hours, like we stayed up all night working on it. So it’s pretty fresh, like
we know what it sounds like. With our KRK speakers at least. So it’s gonna be really interesting to see what they sound like with these speakers. I’m just gonna put ’em up to zero DB. I hope it’s not too loud. Here we go, ready for this? (“No Tears Left to Cry”) ♪ Right now, I’m in a state of mind ♪ ♪ I wanna be in, like, all the time ♪ ♪ Ain’t got no tears left to cry ♪ ♪ Pickin’ it up, pickin’ it up ♪ ♪ I’m lovin’ I’m livin’ so we turn it up ♪ ♪ Yeah we turnin’ it up ♪ ♪ Ain’t got no tears in my body ♪ ♪ I ran out but boy– ♪ – Alright, so first
impression, right off the bat. I could tell that these are
more expensive speakers. I could tell that these
speakers are showing things that I didn’t hear before, that I probably would
have changed in the mix if I had these speakers. I’m kinda regretting
some mix decision I made, (laughing) with the KRKs right now. I gotta say though, I’m more
impressed with the snare than I’ve ever been in my life. Like there’s frequencies
in that snare drum that I’ve never heard before (laughing). And I’m like wow, that’s a
pretty good sounding snare. – Alright, so I’m really
curious what our Say Amen cover sounds like because we
had Shawn Christmas mix this. And when we got it back, we
thought it sounded really beefy. This is probably gonna
sound a lot more beefier than the last one that
we just listened to. (“Say Amen”) Ooh. Holy moles. ♪ Been traveling in packs

a person I don’t wanna be ♪ ♪ I pray for the wicked on the weekend ♪ – That was a good mix. We got a little bit of work to
do on our mixes, personally. But kudos to Shawn Christmas for that one. – So I’m realizing
after listening to that, that Shawn Christmas
is way better at mixing then I even thought he was. (laughing) I wouldn’t be surprised
if he used these speakers, because it sounds really good on these speakers specifically. Like that was kind of amazing sounding. Compared to listening to on the KRKs, like it’s actually a huge difference. I’m hearing things I never
heard before in these songs. I’m hearing problems I never heard before and I’m hearing good things
I never heard before. And it’s definitely gonna
change our mix decisions a lot. Because that’s what studio
monitors are made for. They’re made to reproduce the audio in the most natural state possible, like the way it was meant to be heard. Without exaggerating or
de-exaggerating any frequencies, because any consumer speaker
you would buy nowadays probably has like a
bass boost or something to make it sound better or make up for the fact that
it’s like a cheap speaker, and they don’t want you to think
that it’s a crappy speaker. So they boost the bass and
it sounds more expensive. But these are just really nice speakers, and they have a flat frequency response, and you’re hearing it the
way it’s meant to be heard. That’s what the goal is, at least. That’s why they’re so expensive. And I’m warning you right now that you definitely get what
you pay for with these things because this makes a huge difference. I’m telling you right
now, our mixes are gonna start sounding a little
different after this. Definitely better because I’m
gonna fix a lot of mistakes. There’s been times where people said like oh there’s too much high end or something, and I was like no I don’t think so, it sounds good on my speakers. But mixing is subjective because it depends what you’re listening on. Well I’m realizing I bet if
I was listening with these, I might have made those changes and they wouldn’t have even… They wouldn’t have heard that problem. Because I would have fixed
it in the first place. So this is gonna help us
fix a lot of problems. Some of you might be wondering why we don’t just mix with headphones that are using these speakers. That’s actually bad practice
to mix with headphones. I mean you should go back
and forth and use headphone and see what they sound
like in headphones. But the majority of people
listening to your music are probably gonna be
listening with speakers, out loud in a room and the room has an effect. That’s the issue, the room and the air has an effect on the sound, and that’s why it’s so important
to use studio monitors. And also the fact that
when you use headphones, each ear is isolated to one channel only. You either hear it in the left channel, or the right channel in one ear. You’re not hearing cross talk
between the two channels, like you do when you listen with speakers, and you’re hearing out loud in the room. And that causes a lot of issues. You’re not gonna hear
the actual studio image, so a lot of times delays or reverbs or any sort of a effect
that’s like a stereo effect, might sound more pronounced in headphones. So you will end up turning the effect down more than you intended. So when you listen on
speakers, you’re like wait I should have turned that effect up. That’s because you’re not
hearing it all in a room, you’re hearing ’em separate in each ear and it’s more pronounced. So ultimately I think the
best approach to mixing is going back and forth from
headphones to studio monitors, so you can get an idea of
what they sound like in both, and make sure it sounds
good on everything. But if I had to choose just one, I would definitely choose studio monitors because that’s what a majority
of your listening audience is going to be using, they’re
gonna be listening in a room. And also it’s just, it helps
you solve a lot of issues that you can’t really
solve with headphones on. – So I hope you guys enjoyed that review. Honestly we tried to find something wrong with these speakers, but have yet to find anything, so. Right now we are in love with them. Thank you so much to Adam
Audio for helping us out and hooking us up with these
amazing studio monitors. And if you guys wanna get your own Adam Audio Studio Monitors, there will be a link in the description. They have a wide price range and a bunch of sizes and types so you could go find what fits for you. If you want us to do
more videos like this, let us know in the comments and hit that like button. So this whole entire

you know this is the first video i have seen of yours in like 3+ years? no idea why it finally popped up into my sub box, i've been subbed since you guys started but it just now popped in and i'm glad it did. i thought you guys had quit or just started only playing games like everyone else is doing now. i think the last video i saw of yalls was when you were giving away copies of Sony Vegas Pro 13 if that tells you how long it's actually been. and i haven't been back to plalist live since the one i met you all at in 2012. so yeah it's been a minute. I'm Still using my 400 watt 8"JBL reference monitors that i've been using for years. they were $1800.00 a pair like 10 years ago when i got them. that "breakin period" is a total myth. they are an electronic component. They won't sound ANY defferent in 2 years than they do now unless of course you blow the speakers playing stuff too loud through them. You're not supposed to hear heavy bass so much through studio monitors. that's why you also use headphones. you use them both and balance the sound between the two

  • Reply Midnight Caretakers April 28, 2018 at 1:11 am

So those are fantastic quality speakers. Something though you want to have the other set or a different cheaper set of speakers around for when you are demoing your stuff before release. If you have a song that sounds awesome over awesome speakers that's great, when it sounds awesome on cheap speakers as well, you know you've done something right. It boils down to not everyone has an expensive stereo setup so the better it sounds on low-end equipment the better for your listeners.

It’s all subjective out here in consumer land. Unless you have some solid research to back up your statements about how people consume your product don’t assume most people aren’t watching on iPads and listening on earbuds. Sound mixing like color correction is totally subjective. Your new monitors should help you get more in the middle of the road when it comes to mixing because you’re hearing more accurately and aren’t punching up the bass to overcome deficiencies in your previous monitors. These is a direct correlation between sound mixing and color correction. It’s why there are high end color corrected video monitors and high end sound corrected audio monitors, they let the creator accurately create a recording but you really have no idea what it looks like to every consumer, so you have to create for yourself and hope the average consumer “gets” it.

If you want the best stereo sound stage when listening try move the speakers a bit further apart, rule of thumb is that the distance between the speakers should be the same as the distance to the listening position in such a way that you can draw a triangle, if you have them to close to eachother you will miss a lot of the stereo sound image. Try move them further apart and then move your chair backwards a bit till you have the same distance, when correct setup you should be able to hear the vocals floating right in the middle center between the speakers.

I've been mixing sound since 1985, and there is no "break-in" for speakers. What some people may be doing is cooking the voice coil and thus causing it to become permanently distorted because that distorted sound is what they're used to hearing.

Also, idealy, yes you do want to use both to reference your mixes but you should also be telling people that it makes a huge difference in the type of acoustic treatments you have in your mixing area. Someone who doesn't have acoustic treatment up but has fancy nearfield monitors will have a harder time achieving a better mix than with a good pair of high quality studio monitor headphones. Although, I'm not really sure where you getting at with the idea that you can't hear stereo as well in headphones because if anything, you can hear the placement better which will give you more control over panning and overall stereo width.

    Also, try mixing in mono.

Concerning the "BREAK IN": I've owned many pairs of speakers over the last 30 years ranging from pro-sumer/pro theater audio, too professional studio monitor speakers. You can always liken it to a new pair of jeans. You wear them a few times, you wash them a few times, and then they fit perfect. It's the same with speakers…..you need to give them a bit of work to loosen them up. Much like giving someone a drink before dancing. It just loosens everything up and the overall sound in place regardless of what speakers you decide on. My 2 cents, and thanks for the video! ALWAYS BREAK NEW SPEAKERS IN BEFORE MAKING YOUR FINAL DECISION!!!

They shouldn't be on 0 dB. Put your audio interface to max output, then calibrate your speakers with pink noise using an SPL to taste between to 77-83 dbfs at place of hearing, beginning by turning down the level of monitor completely, and adjusting it until chosen level is reached. Distance between monitors, left speaker to your seat and right speaker to your seat (equilateral triangle).

I have a pair of those, I use them every day. My listening space is calibrated and the imaging is excellent. Those ribbon tweeters are quite something. My friend has a pair of Electrostatic Martin Logan's, and I can honestly say high end and mid range reproduction is very competitive indeed on the A7X's but I know that you can't compare apple and pear. Now with all that said, I also have two JBL L8400PCH/238 subs wired in stereo to complement my set up, and let me tell you – the sound is INCREDIBLE

The Adam's in this video are professional and they will treat your ears to some very nice audio candy. Various comments here are correct; you really do have to think about your room acoustics especially if you splash out on expensive monitor speakers.

    Thanks for sharing!!

EDIT: Mixing on reference headphones is also a MUST. Do not think that listening to a mix on JUST studio monitor speakers will give you your desired result. You should do another video comparing your monitors vs reference headphones. I'm 100% sure you will agree with me once you've done it.

With those bare walls it will sound crappy no matter what monitor you use. Your voice is already full of room echo. It will sound VERY BAD and you should not mix anything with it. Time to control the room.

Wrong speaker positioning, wrong distance, directly put on the table, not room conditioning… Very poor review. The unboxing was fine, though.

Breaking in speakers isn't a myth, but its less noticeable with active speakers – everybody can hear it, especially in the bass area

Comparing the Rokit's to these monitors is not fair. I would like to hear your thoughts on a comparison on the KRK Vxt 6 with these. I own the KRK VXT 4 which I think has a similar quality of sound. Keep up the good work.

This was definitely not a technical review but as you guys said, a good pair of monitors will reveal problems that a cheaper pair never will especially if the room is treated correctly and you have your ratios for speaker placement, listening position, reflections and bass traps sorted out.

I enjoyed the video. Very entertaining. Don't worry too much about the trolls in the comments. Some people just want to make a point of being heard even if they have nothing to say.
