Sony PlayStation Teardown

December 4, 2019

Kels, can you believe we got a Playstation?
And we were first in line at Circuit City? We totally scored. Totally But I had to babysit so many rugrats
to pay $299 for this thing. Can we just get started so we can put it back together and
actually play the thing? It’s been 2 hrs since I’ve listene to kurt and im having
withdrawls. Dude, chill. On that note, let’s get this teardown started. Kelsea: Alllll righty now, (device flips over)
looks like we’ve got 6 screws on the bottom of the Playstation, so we’ll take those
out and lift up the top case. Kelsea: uhh ewww, this thing is brand new
and there’s like 25 years worth of dust in here. Weiiird. And there’s the CD ROM drive, We’ll just
remove a couple of cables and lift it right out. Boo-Ya! Not only are CDs cheaper to make than cartridges,
but they provide waaay more storage, so the graphics on games look waaay cooler than Super
Nintendo. And the Playstation reads the disc with frickin’ lazers! Soooo tight. OK Now I really want to play so lets take
out the last few screws to free up the memory card/controller ports. With that out of the way, we can disconnect
the power supply and lift the inner case up…. Hooooly motherboard. it looks like a little city….a really dirty….city! Kelsea: yeah disgusting, but the motherboard
is home to a 32 bit, 33.9 Megahertz CPU, 2 Megabytes of RAM and 1 MB of VRAM Who’s the nerd now?! That’s a crazy amount
of processing power in a home system, I mean have you seen the graphics on Ridge Racer?
It’s almost like real life! Greeeat real life… Not why I wanna escape
into video game world at all. All that’s left is this mega power supply
which takes up a whopping 21% of the Playstation’s footprint! What about the controllers? Looks like quite
the upgrade from the rectangle ones. Totally! No more D pad and this is the first
time we’ve seen a controller with four directional buttons. But the chord is still kinda short. Kels, do you think we’ll ever get wireless
controllers? I really hope so cuz I keep getting grounded
for sitting to close to the tv… in the dark.. alone… with my thoughts.. and my dog… Annnnnnnd with that, now seems like a good
time to talk about repairability The Playstation got a stellar 8 out of 10
on our repairability scale, and here’s why…. One the Upside
There are very few components involved, and everything is straightforward to remove and
replace. You only need a Phillips #1 screwdriver and
a Spudger to take the console completely apart. And The optical drive is very easy to remove. Kelsea:
But on the downside All of the I/O ports on the back of the console
are soldered to the motherboard. Boooo. If you love gaming as much as kay-kay goes
and wanna time travel to the future, hit that subscribe button below and check out our other
game console teardown on our channel. Byyyeeee!

  • Reply Dr_Kachu san December 3, 2019 at 6:00 pm

At that time, everyone else was shitting their pants due how ridiculously powerful the GTE was with sega rushing in to shove more chips to get the saturn maybe close enough performance and nintendo giving their thing an extra year to survive that monstrosity.
And people that bought a 3DO for whooping 699 , six months earlier were having a massive, MASSIVE case of buyer's remorse.
