Ricky Gervais And Stephen Go Head-To-Head On Religion

August 23, 2019

>>Stephen: HEY, EVERYBODY,
WE’RE HERE WITH RICKY GERVAIS. WE WERE TALKING BEFORE, ABOUT
THIS TWEET BEFORE, THAT YOU LIKED THIS TWEET THAT WAS
TALKING ABOUT HOW YOU WERE GOING IT TO GO TO HELL, THAT IT SHOULD
GET A KNIGHTHOOD. DO YOU HAVE ANY INTEREST IN A
KNIGHTHOOD? BECAUSE A LOT OF– A LOT OF
BRITISH PERFORMERS END UP, LIKE, GETTING A KNIGHTHOOD FOR SERVICE
TO THE COMMUNITY OR DRAMA. DOES THAT INTEREST YOU?>>IT’S NOT LIKE IT WAS IN THE
OLD DAYS. IF IT PLANTE I COULD GO DOWN THE
STREET ON A HORSE WITH A SWORD KILLING PEOPLE, THEN, YES. BUT IT’S NOTHING. IT’S NOTHING– GIVE ME A BIG
SWORD AND A HORSE, AND THEN I’LL TAKE IT. YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN?>>Stephen: TALKING ABOUT HELL
BEFORE, ABOUT THIS TWEET ABOUT YOU GOING TO HELL. AND I KNOW THAT YOU’RE AN
ATHEIST, CORRECT?>>YEAH.( APPLAUSE ).>>Stephen: PEOPLE HAVE BEEN
DEBATING– THAT’S THE DEVIL WAITING FOR YOU IN HELL, BY THE
WAY. DID YOU WANT TO DEBATE THIS? SO RICKY GERVAIS, WHY IS THERE
SOMETHING INSTEAD OF NOTHING?>>THAT’S– THAT’S– THAT MAKES
NO SENSE AT ALL.>>Stephen: YOU HAVE TO ANSWER
MY QUESTION.>>THAT’S NOT THE TWO CHOICE S.>>Stephen: THOSE ARE THE
CHOICES I’M GIVING YOU. I’M THE HOST. ( LAUGHTER ).>>WELL, I DON’T —
>>Stephen: DO YOU WANT TO CONCEDE THE DEBATE. WHY IS THERE SOMETHING RATHER
THAN NOTHING?>>WHAT DO YOU MEAN OUT OF
NOTHING?>>Stephen: WHY IS THERE
SOMETHING INSTEAD OF WHY IS THERE NOTHING? WHY DOES THE UNIVERSE EXIST AT
ALL? WHY IS THERE SOMETHING?>>BUT SURELY THE QUESTION IS
NOT WHY BUT HOW? WHY IS IRRELEVANT.>>Stephen: ANOTHER FINE, HOW
IS THERE SOMETHING? IF YOU THINK OF GOD AS THE PRIME
MOVER,.>>I DON’T.>>Stephen: IS THERE A PRIME
MOVER. IS THERE A DEMI-URGE THAT
STARTED EVERYTHING.>>OUTSIDE OF SCIENCE AND NATURE
I DON’T BELIEVE SO. SO THE INTERESTING THING IS–
THAT’S THE THING I’M AN AGNOVELTYIC ATHEIST. AGNOSTIC MEANS NO ONE KNOWS IF
THERE’S A GOD. EVERYONE IS TECHNICALLY AN
AGNOSTIC BECAUSE WE DON’T KNOW. AN AGNOSTIC ATHEIST IS SOMEONE
WHO DOESN’T KNOW THERE IS A GOD–
>>YOU’RE NOT CONVICTED OF YOUR ATHEISM.>>I AM. ATHEISM ISN’T A BELIEF SYSTEM. ATHEISM– SO THIS IS ATHEISM IN
A NUTSHELL. YOU SAY, “THERE’S A GOD.” I SAY, “YOU CAN PROVE THAT?”
YOU SAY, “NO.” I SAID, “I DON’T BELIEVE YOU
THEN.” SO YOU BELIEVE IN ONE GOD, I
ASSUME.>>Stephen: UHHH, IN THREE
PERSONS, BUT GO AHEAD. ( LAUGHTER ).>>OKAY, SO YOU BELIEVE– OKAY. BUT THERE ARE 3,000 TO CHOOSE
FROM, YOU KNOW, OF PEOPLE –>>Stephen: I’VE DONE SOME
READING, YEAH.>>SO BASICALLY, YOU BELIEVE
IN– YOU DENY ONE LESGOD THAN I DO. YOU DON’T BELIEVE IN 2,999 GOD. AND I DON’T BELIEVE IN JUST ONE
MORE.>>Stephen: RIGHT. ( LAUGHTER )
( APPLAUSE )>>Stephen: DO YOU DO YOU DO
YOU EVER HAVE A FEELING OF GREAT GRATITUDE FOR EXISTENCE?>>OF COURSE,.>>Stephen: DO YOU EVER HAVE–
>>I KNOW THE CHANCES ARE BILLIONS TO ONE THEY AM ON THIS
PLANET AS ME AND NEVER WILL BE AGAIN.>>Stephen: I KNOW I CAN’T
CONVINCE YOU THAT THERE IS A GOD, NOR DO I REALLY WANT TO
CONVINCE YOU THAT THERE IS A GOD. I CAN ONLY EXPLAIN MY EXPERIENCE
WHICH IS I HAVE A STRONG DESIRE TO DIRECT THAT GRATITUDES
TOWARDS SOMETHING OR SOMEONE.>>OF COURSE,.>>Stephen: ASK THAT THING IS
GOD.>>WE WANT TO– WE WANT TO MAKE
SENSE OF NATURE AND SCIENCE. IT IS TOO UNFATHOMABLE–
EVERYTHING IN THE UNIVERSE WAS ONCE CRUNCHED IN SOME SMALL
ATOM —
>>Stephen: BUT YOU DON’T KNOW THAT. YOU’RE JUST BELIEVINGLY STEPHEN
HAWKING AND THAT’S A MATTER OF FAITH IN HIS ABILITIES. YOU DON’T KNOW IT YOURSELF. YOU’RE ACCEPTING THAT BECAUSE
SOMEONE TOLD YOU.>>WELL, YEAH, BUT SCIENCE IS
CONSTANTLY PROVED OVER TIME. YOU SEE, IF WE TAKE SOMETHING
LIKE ANY FICTION, AND ANY HOLY BOOK AND ANY OTHER FICTION, AND
DESTROYED IT, OKAY. IN 1,000 YEARS’ TIME, THAT
WOULDN’T COME BACK JUST AS IT WAS. WHEREAS IF WE TOOK EVERY SCIENCE
BOOK AND EVERY FACT AND DESTROYED THEM ALL, IN 1,000
YEARS THEY’D ALL BE BACK BECAUSE ALL THE SAME TACKLES WOULD BE
THE SAME RESULT.>>Stephen: THAT’S GOOD. THAT’S REALLY GOOD.( APPLAUSE )
THAT’S REALLY GOOD.
>>SODON’T NEED– I DON’T NEED–
I DON’T NEED FAITH IN SCIENCE. I DON’T NEED FAITH TON PROBABLY
IF I JUMP OUT OF A WINDOW, EVERY OTHER TIME SOMEONE JUMPED OUT OF
A WINDOW THEY SMASHED TO THE GROUND BECAUSE OF THIS THING
CALLED GRAVITY.>>Stephen: AND THEN SATAN
WOULD BE RAPING YOU.>>THIS IS WHY I’M A GOOD BOY.>>Stephen: RICKY, PLEASE COME
BACK AND DEBATE SOMETHING EVEN MORE IMPORTANT. “DAVID BRENT: LIFE ON THE ROAD”
IS ON NETFLIX FEBRUARY 10. RICKY GERVAIS, EVERYONE!

Plenty of evdence that God was made in the image of the local king/dictator – dictators demand unquestioning obediance & loyalty & reward accordingly (believers get heaven, unbelievers get hell)

That's why they have to start drumming it into 4 year olds. If you can't drink until you are 21, no religion until you are 18. Lets see if it can stand on it's feet then.

How can there be something out of nothing?  Makes as much sense as how can there be God out of nothing?  God has always existed?  Makes no more sense than simply saying the universe has always existed.  Placing God at the beginning answers nothing.

  • Reply Dustin F July 29, 2019 at 6:06 pm

I view the Bible and all bronze age texts to be interesting pieces of literature and nothing more. They give us insights of how humans viewed the world thousands of years before science. It was wrong about astronomy, geology, biology and slavery. No mention of bacteria or atoms. The Bible indeed does, contain a warrant for trafficking in humans, for ethnic cleansing, for slavery, for bride price, and for indiscriminate massacre, but we are not bound by any of it because it was put together by crude , uncultured human mammals. But I say Why argue about the contents of a BOOK when the argument should be about the existence of the BOOK and how it managed to get control of the government under Constantine. What we know as the Bible was cobbled together under Constantine by a committee; many books then in circulation among Christians were left out. (Various churches even now disagree as to which books are canonical and which aren't.) This Bible was then hand copied over and over again through many generations until the invention by Gutenberg of the press. Mistakes crept in–many of them–and subtle changes were introduced to push one religious view or another. Biblical scholar Bart Ehrman once noted that, due to copying and transcription errors, there are now more errors in the Bible than there are words. Somehow it survives by brainwashing young minds into believing in heaven and hell.

It breaks my heart how many of you don't believe in god, If you prayed and gave it a chance you would know without a shadow of a doubt god exists and is very real, there is a reason why so many people and some very intelligent ones believe without a doubt and not crazies like seeing ghosts and ufos but seriously believe. If I was a non believer I would want to know for sure especially with whats resting on my decision heaven or hell, if you want to know for yourself without anyone telling you what to believe just open your heart and pray (by pray I mean just talk to god) and see if you feel god, if you don't right away then your still hardening your heart and just trying to prove hes not there, trully open your heart and pray to god and see what you feel, you might be VERY surprised. The first time I REALLY OPENLY PRAYED by myself laying in my bed the feeling was indescribable, I had tears rolling down my face. Regardless if you believe or not, god believes in you. Pray on it.

Nope, evolution created everything about us. Even the ability to have beliefs, like some mystical being from another dimension (god) not only exists but has the want to create slaves to worship it and punish those that don't believe in it even though it could've created us to automatically believe in him. It's an excellent example of delusion.

There are really two options only to explain Existence, either to believe in thousands of random impossible coincidences that created everything from nothing!! including life and consciousness (Atheist explanation), or believe there is a God who created the universe and everything in it (Non-Atheist explanation). As an engineer, I believe that every complex design has a designer. A Ferrari or a jet aircraft cannot be created by (mindless) random coincidences regardless of how many billions of years it is given. Period.

There's no point arguing since religious don't question. And if they do, they're not religious! See the irony? There's no point even trying telling your facts to a religious if you haven't broke that barrage first! The real question is why not question! There are many religions. But try to burn the bible to find out if it's really so holy as it says it is! Because if it is, it won't burn! But personally a person that threatens me with hell, is already my enemy! Sure you want to be still friends with your evil religion?

Gervais: "Science constantly proves (itself) all the time." That's not exactly true. More often than not, science disproves preceding science. Example, how much theory that was taken as scientific fact in 1819 is still taken as fact today? Very little, because intervening years of science have upended or disproven it. It is logical, then, to ask "how much theory that is taken as scientific fact today, will still be taken as scientific fact in 2219?" My guess? Very little. Therefore, how much 'faith', for lack of a better word, should be placed in science, and is it worth it, or even sensible, to place the fate of one's immortal soul (if there is one) in it? That's a question that, I think, merits consideration.

I dont think anyone alive today is qualified to say that God does or doesn't exist, because no one alive today has actually you know, died, I mean you can look at physics or the holy texts but at the end of the day no one has any idea, just a feeling, so science cant decide if God does or doesn't exist and everyone just needs to accept that they dont truly know and can't know until they die

I believe Science and Spirituality are not against each other, they go hand in hand. We just haven't properly discovered yet that it's the case. Spirituality is kind of static I think, we have beliefs from 3000years ago still kicking. Science books in school are re-printed all the time because of new discoveries. I'm positive that bridge between Science and Spirituality will get clearer and clearer with time.

,,That there is a God, then, is no matter of doubt to those who receive the Holy Scriptures, the Old Testament, I mean, and the New; nor indeed to most of the Greeks. For, as we said, the knowledge of the existence of God is implanted in us by nature. But since the wickedness of the Evil One has prevailed so mightily against man's nature as even to drive some into denying the existence of God, that most foolish and woe-fulest pit of destruction, whose folly David, revealer of the Divine meaning, exposed when he said: ,The fool said in his heart, There is no God' so the disciples of the Lord and His Apostles, made wise by the Holy Spirit and working wonders in His power and grace, took them captive in the net of miracles and drew them up out of the depths of ignorance to the light of the knowledge of God. In like manner also their successors in grace and worth, both pastors and teachers, having received the enlightening grace of the Spirit, were wont, alike by the power of miracles and the word of grace, to enlighten those walking in darkness and to bring back the wanderers into the way. But as for us who are not recipients either of the gift of miracles or the gift of teaching (for indeed we have rendered ourselves unworthy of these by our passion for pleasure), come, let us in connection with this theme discuss a few of those things which have been delivered to us on this subject by the expounders of grace, calling on the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

All things, that exist, are either created or uncreated. If, then, things are created, it follows that they are also wholly mutable. For things, whose existence originated in change, must also be subject to change, whether it be that they perish or that they become other than they are by act of wills. But if things are uncreated they must in all consistency be also wholly immutable. For things which are opposed in the nature of their existence must also be opposed in the mode of their existence, that is to say, must have opposite properties: who, then, will refuse to grant that all existing things, not only such as come within the province of the senses, but even the very angels, are subject to change and transformation and movement of various kinds? For the things appertaining to the rational world, I mean angels and spirits and demons, are subject to changes of will, whether it is a progression or a retrogression in goodness, whether a struggle or a surrender; while the others suffer changes of generation and destruction, of increase and decrease, of quality and of movement in space. Things then that are mutable are also wholly created. But things that are created must be the work of some maker, and the maker cannot have been created. For if he had been created, he also must surely have been created by some one, and so on till we arrive at something uncreated. The Creator, then, being uncreated, is also wholly immutable. And what could this be other than Deity?

And even the very continuity of the creation, and its preservation and government, teach us that there does exist a Deity, who supports and maintains and preserves and ever provides for this universe. For how could opposite natures, such as fire and water, air and earth, have combined with each other so as to form one complete world, and continue to abide in indissoluble union, were there not some omnipotent power which bound them together and always is preserving them from dissolution?

What is it that gave order to things of heaven and things of earth, and all those things that move in the air and in the water, or rather to what was in existence before these, viz., to heaven and earth and air and the elements of fire and water? What was it that mingled and distributed these? What was it that set these in motion and keeps them in their unceasing and unhindered course? Was it not the Artificer of these things, and He Who hath implanted in everything the law whereby the universe is carried on and directed? Who then is the Artificer of these things? Is it not He Who created them and brought them into existence. For we shall not attribute such a power to the spontaneous. For, supposing their coming into existence was due to the spontaneous; what of the power that put all in orders? And let us grant this, if you please. What of that which has preserved and kept them in harmony with the original laws of their existence? Clearly it is something quite distinct from the spontaneous. And what could this be other than Deity?"

    Rickys statement is weak.

Its irrelevant weather one believes in 1 or in 1 B Gods, its still the belief that a Creator(s) made this whole existence.

Rickys argument is that there is no Creator,no cause for the beginning of the universe, none.

Now,he used a analogy that is best suited for a monotheistic theists against a Polytheistic theists.

… If you took every holy book, every holy book there’s ever been, every religious book, every bit of spirituality, and hid them or destroyed them…

then you took every science book and destroyed that, in a thousand years’ time, those science books would be back exactly the same, because the tests would always turn out the same.

Those religious books would either never exist or they’d be totally different, because there’s no test.

Science is experimenting on the facts. We all have the same facts. Facts to hypothesis to theories to law. Scientists interpretations of those facts vary based on assumptions. Those assumptions are based on presuppositions or axioms.
Take Uniformitarianism versus Catastrophism for instance.
Can you look at both theories with a scientific mind that tries to prove the theories wrong or do you want one to be right?

To still believe in 'gods' in 2019 just proves how simple creatures we are.

Remove all books for a thousand years will produce new gods and scriptures, but science will be the same again. Why is that? (Rhetorical question)

    “You don’t believe in 2999 Gods, I don’t believe in 1 more.”
Look, we actually don’t believe in 2999 different interpretations of that same God. There’s only 1 God and you disbelieve in that 1 God in the only one.

“If we burnt all holy books, they would never come back.”
Islam would though, because the majority have memorized most of the the Qur’an off the top their heads and some even got the whole thing memorized.

Is this Stephen Covey for real here, or is he just playing Devil's Advocate (no pun intended)? This snippet seems a little off. It's the British guy who is rationally iconoclastic and the American, born to a culture that rebelled against monarchy and empire more than two centuries back, who seems backwardly repectful of what they stood for.

"Why is there something rather than nothing?" Why should there be nothing?
BTW, something obviously came from nothing, as if it came from something else, you'd ask what that something came from. But if something came from nothing, you wouldn't ask where that nothing came from! So the infinite regression is terminated.

I thought Colbert was an atheist… Hmm. He asked the right question and Ricky responds to the question "Why does anything exist," with a non-sequitur, "that's not the only two choices," wait what? No choices were offered. Ricky just answer how something comes from no space, no time, no matter, no energy, no laws of physics. This is the first question the atheist needs to answer and he seems unprepared to engage. Almost as if his atheism is completely uninformed.

At 1:54 Ricky defines himself as an "Agnostic Atheist." Which is as coherent as a married bachelor. An atheist affirms the knowledge claim, "There are no gods or anything like God." An agnostic claims, " I have no knowledge whether or not there is a god or gods." The first is a knowledge claim that has to be defended, the second is not a knowledge claim whatsoever.

He mentions that he believes there is nothing outside of nature in the etymology of the universe. This runs opposite of science that suggests that both this universe had a beginning from nothing, and if a multiverse exists, it too had to have a similar beginning a finite time in the past. No science disconfirms either of those claims according to Alan Guth, father of inflationary cosmology!

2:04 Ricky claims that not only does he not know but that no one can know if there is a god. This is strong agnosticism indeed. So although he is unfamiliar with the most basic of the cosmological arguments for the existence of God, and therefore most likely ignorant of the two dozen lessor known arguments, he claims, having done zero (I mean really…one can gain understanding of Leibniz or Aquinas or other versions in five minutes), to have plumed the depths of what all people can know on the matter. The self-delusion is incredible.

It's a flashy argument, but that logic is flawed. About the same science coming back eventually. Science is not a mechanical process, it's a creative process and requires imagination. Which means, yeah the data is the same, but who's to say we're gonna make the same hipothesis on that data? who's to say we're gonna come up with the same theories? There's about a thousand ways to explain many natural processes and none of them is absolutely the best. Most theories that are accepted as the most plausible, it's because they either fail less to predict certain events or cover a broader spectrum of natural events, and because they haven't been proven wrong so far. I'm an atheist as well, but that argument is not solid.

2:12 "Atheism isn't a belief system," and so apparently we are not going to answer the key universal religious questions!

    On atheism:

What is the meaning of life?

No meaning, we are a collection of physical matter no different than dirt.

We have no more purpose than dirt.

We have no moral obligations because we are just dancing to our DNA. So rape and incest, child abuse and people like Jeffrey Epstein and Adolph Hitler are not wrong or evil on atheism because there is no such category on atheism. They are just out of fashion with their culture.

Where does Ricky go when he dies? No where, he just non exists.

So he espouses a view of where we came from, blind change and evolution, how we should live our lives, as if all morals were just a matter of subjective opinion, how we should treat others, Ricky, if he were consistent would say there is no standard whatsoever since morals can't be objective. And he would then have us believe, "Atheism (by which he means strong agnosticism) is not a worldview)!

This guy should be hosting "The View." He is boldly spewing out false ignorant statements faster than the camera can record them. Reminds me of Bill Maher, or Penn Jillette, George Carlin (probably the first popularizer of appeals to verbosity as a defense of atheism), Paton Oswald, or actor Stephen Fry. Rants, non-sequiturs, equivocation of terms, strawman attacks, sweeping generalizations, snob appeals, mob appeals, are the bumper-sticker defenses common to their worldview defenses. It's like they didn't graduate from high school. Oh wait, most didn't.
