Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is here!

June 26, 2019

okay lady it's 3:00 in the morning somewhere and it's like a Monday that means it must be a raspberry pie at least oh man I love these it's early morning the okay and there's a new raspberry pie the raspberry pie for what you've all been waiting for we're so excited and we even have one that we can point to while we talk about it let's start just because I always like to make sure everyone's involved what's the Raspberry Pi computer what is Rosie Pi computer the Raspberry Pi computer is a small credit card-sized all at one computer that can run software it can run Linux it can even run Windows and it has Ethernet USB Wi-Fi HDMI has all the things that you expect on a computer but it's really small and truly low-cost and it's designed so that everybody can have a computer it's only $35 for the entry-level and there's even that PI zero just $5 at the entry-level and it basically means anyone can get started and have their own computer so if you're a student or a young person maybe there's a computer at school used and there's a computer at home but you want to have your very own perfect for as we pipe it's also great for industrial uses for embedded Linux situations where you want to have a hardware that's controlled by a standalone controller and makers and crafters and hackers love them as well because they're small they're fairly low power and it's a full Linux computer with GPIO that can run new pixels my favorite thing about our favorite things about the Raspberry Pi is it's it's a great device that's a great cause the Raspberry Pi foundation is a fantastic group of people they've also just got into publishing so some of our favorite magazines are now coming from the PI foundation and then this entire group of people that every single year there's something amazing that's getting the Hat that the computing power of the Raspberry Pi into the hands of more people so speaking of Raspberry Pi for this is a big deal it's super fast it's dropping this is so fast so these in photos here it is look who's in his glory its glory there's a lot of things it's added so first up it's now the Broadcom PCM 2711 it's a quad-core cortex a 72 arm v8 it's a 16-bit system-on-chip and each course learning at 1.5 gigahertz and what's interesting when those through this series you can get it in three configurations you can get it one gig to Gig or four gigabytes of ram so historically with the pi3 it was a quad core processor but it was an earlier process this process can go much faster and it can access a lot more ram so they bumped up the ram because a lot of people were like oh that it's very fast but I just need a little bit more memory so you'll pay a little more but you can get up to four gigabytes and one thing is you look back at those USB ports you'll notice to them are blue those are USB 3 ports so they're super fast their speedy USB 3 ports which means if you want to connect an external hard drive if you can't get over this it'll be USB 3 speeds and then you still have the two USB 2 speed ports also know something else it looks like what are these two ports here it looks like there's like a couple no it's a one USB port like a HDMI port like my sexy didn't right yep so instead of having one HDMI port there's now two and they're both micro HDMI that's the only way they could fit it so it doesn't mean that some cases won't fit for example our classic or Raspberry Pi 3 cases we're revising them for the Raspberry Pi 4 because now it needs 2 slots one for each of micro HDMI port and also the power port used to be a micro B and now it's a USBC connector that's also because to get power for the Raspberry Pi you just need a bigger cable with more connectors you start pointing this out or in the overhead yeah that USB USB C for power so they recommend a big chunky power supplies again there's quad-core 1.4 gigahertz these are big processors so something like this it's a USB C 3 amp 5 volt adapter for some situations you might be able to get away with about 2.4 amps with an adapter but if you're really gonna go all out or this processor upgrading to a 3 amp 5 volt adapter is going to be a must if you want to add other stuff like cameras and display next up we got a couple HTML ports two HDMI ports and again these are micro HDMI they look like micro USB but they're not double micro HDMI but we and almost everyone else stocks cables that will take you from micro HDMI to classic HDMI and there's two ports each one can do 4k at 60 frames per second so great for digital displays digital signage I know that's a very popular use for the Raspberry Pi still has the camera and display connector same as before so if you have a camera you can connect it if you have the HD sorry the DSi display also still works that classic audio connector is still there and it's still this the same thing it's got four contacts so left and right audio and then the fourth contact is tv-out video so it can still do TV out it's cool there's some places where you can't get HDMI monitors but you may have access to old televisions so you can get NTSC or PAL okay you've got those USB ports two USB 2 s 2 USB 3 s again you know it doesn't have a SATA port on it but now if you have a hard drive external hard drive you want to connect now connect up to the USB 3 port you'll get SuperSpeed it's got a Gigabit Ethernet as well so the ethernet is still on here but now it's Gigabit so a lot of people have asked for that as well I guess the processor that Hindle is USB and Ethernet has been greatly upgraded so you'll get much much better speeds so if you want to use as a server or sending/receiving data either that's always the best but if you don't use Ethernet there's the Wi-Fi Bluetooth chip I was gonna ask with this what's this you know this metal thing looks like it's it's covering up something special it's covering up that Broadcom chip that does the Wi-Fi and bluetooth support so that's communicating over here like SDIO or something so this is the same Bluetooth Wi-Fi chip is before it's got that cool low cost reference about antenna as well from current this is that main core chip it's got that heat spreader on it you shouldn't need a heatsink but if you would like you know you can get a heat sink or a fan attached on top and this that external RAM so one two or four gigabyte depending on how much you paid it supports POA so if you get the POA hat you can power and do data over the Ethernet port and then these four pins connect to the p OE module on the Hat or external module however you want to wire it up so you don't need a separate power supply if you want to you know embed this in something I have only one cable on the flip side you can see the USB see all the WCC that USB 3.0 has a ton more connectors here there's HDMI ports over here capacitors and crystals here and then still that micro SD card as normal you'll need to get the latest version of raspbian Buster which may not be out the first day that this is available but by the time you get these shipped to you it'll be up online at Lesley Pi site so make sure you've updated your SD card because you will not be able to run old SD card so you have SD card from the PI one two or three you do have to upgrade it to Buster it's not enough just to get the latest Jesse you have to get the firmware that comes with the latest version of raspbian and then I'm sure other architect other Linux distros like arch or Gen 2 or a bun too will all follow along and add the firmware support for this new chip and then the GPIO it's fully backwards compatible and I believe there's actually an extra I squared C port as well there's a couple more peripherals available but it should be fully backwards compatible with all the existing peripherals it's three volt logic has I squared C UART SPI and then we'll find out soon you know is when I get my documentation what other that peripherals these pins can perform okay that's a great overview a couple questions for you yeah so one is a statement in the question the statement is if someone wants to order this now they can go to it's a new product it'll say coming soon just sign up sign up when it comes in because when these are gonna come in and multiple shipment we send out an email we don't get back orders because that's doesn't that doesn't work here's the deal good yeah nobody in the US is gonna have these until at least a couple days after because they don't ship until the release menses you see things so then they ship so we won't have these until maybe Tuesday Wednesday Thursday night works is when you when you put your email in we send out the emails once they're physically here so when you place your order it goes out as soon as possible you don't take your money in anyway so that's the statement part question question we have circuit Python that or precise blanket will that be there soon I absolutely believe it will be up by the end of this week I it's once Python three and you know this is basically a full PC this is a two or three times faster than the pi3 B+ so people will really enjoy be able to do video next question audio it's faster what are you gonna do at this um so I think actually you know this would be really good for is it could do a lot of machine learning stuff maybe without an accelerator so what I'm you know really excited for is doing video machine learning audio maybe even compute some modules on models on this circuit a module on a Raspberry Pi for and then we put it on our little edge badge yeah I think also the dual HDMI is pretty cool you know we can make gigantic eyes you know our faith I know I did that before I used to raspberry PI's and I sink them yeah but this we could do a dual 40 inch HDMI eyeballs that move around so I don't know yeah I did this in two ways one I had an HDMI splitter and then the eyes was identical yeah and then I had two raspberry PI's I tried to think about Todd no I could just do it now you have to display so figure out how that works well congratulations the Raspberry Pi folks and then everybody out there who's gonna be doing cool things can't wait to see what your and future Liz and eben and Gordon for sending us is so he could get blinka going yeah we got a little bit earlier so we were able to start working on some software yes all right sweets just sign up and get one of these cool super fast pie fours a blazing here as berry pie computers you

Give me 2-4+ PCI X16 and I will be interested. I really want to see non mobile versions of the ARM architecture, it has so much more potential then X86.

How much speed could we get from a fast microSD like eg an UHS-3? Is it connected on USB3 or PCIe?

I would have loved if they would have put a SATA port, power/reset button and IR sensor on this one, even if it is in the form of an addon hat/shield that you put on top of this. The USB C should be able to give it enough juice

I want to get this to modify an arcade machine with games. Now do I buy the mame, and or PC Emulation system and or Pandora's box to go along with this raspberry Pi 4??? How many games are on the raspberry and does the 1gb have more than the 4gb model??? I'm as computer efficient to log into email but I am having trouble setting up and using google chrome and the face-book and the tweeter!!! But this all sounds easy. My daughters, nieces & nephews want a 4 player trackball spinner light gun & steering wheel system.

Is it possible to switch back and forth between booting from SD card and an SSD connected to one of the USB3 ports on the Pi 4 B? As far as I can tell, it's a one-time switch over on the Pi 3 B+.

  • Reply Simon May June 26, 2019 at 7:37 pm

The gigabit ethernet no longer derives from the USB chip – it has a direct connection to the processor. PCIe I believe.

It's great they finally gave it more memory, usb3 and more power. I doubt it will handle non-trivial tensorflow models. I got tired of waiting for raspi to get fast enough and bought myself a Jetson Nano, which is fast enough to run object segmentation models in real-time.
